Shift
The time spent on a client’s premises in a single block of
time. Shift begins at the time the caregiver arrives on premises
and ends at the time the caregiver ceases to provide care. If,
in a single day, the caregiver works at the home of more than
one client, then the time spent at each client’s home is
considered a shift. On any given day, a caregiver may work many
shifts.
Split
Shift
An assignment with a single client where more than one shift per
day is scheduled for the caregiver. A split shift generally
involves a couple of hours in the early morning and a couple of
hours in late afternoon.
Hourly
Shift
An hourly assignment which includes any scheduled shifts not
listed below.

Hour Day Shift
A scheduled assignment with a single client lasting 12
consecutive hours. Generally 12 hour day shifts
begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 8:00 p.m.

Hour Night Shift
A 12 hour scheduled assignment, generally beginning at 8:00
p.m. and lasting to 8:00 a.m. during which time the caregiver is
expected to be available to attend to the client’s needs, even
during the night.

Hour Sleepover
A 12 hour scheduled assignment, generally beginning at 8:00
p.m. and lasting to 8:00 a.m. during which time the caregiver is
entitled to a minimum of 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
24
Hour Shift
A scheduled assignment lasting 24 hours during which time the
caregiver is expected to remain on the client’s premises and
to be available to attend to the needs of the client.
Live-In
A scheduled assignment generally lasting at least 1 month
during which time the caregiver will live on the client’s
premises at least 2 days per week and may receive room and board
as part of his/her compensation. The daily schedule of the
live-in caregiver will include 8-10 hours of work, 6-8 hours of
uninterrupted sleep and 8 hours of leisure time.
